In 1778, on the lower tier of the bell tower, a warm church was established in honor of Tikhon of Amathus, thanks to the efforts and funds of Tula merchants. This was done in memory of an altar with the same name that existed in the first stone Assumption Cathedral of the Kremlin, which preceded the current one. In 1853, the churchwarden Vukol Kuzovlev installed an iconostasis in this church.

At the same time, Vukol Kuzovlev arranged an altar in the southern part of the Church of Tikhon of Amathus in the name of John Chrysostom, in memory of the altar that was in the Assumption Cathedral until the beginning of the 19th century. In 1894, the Church of Tikhon of Amathus was transferred to the Old Believer community. By 1903, the community numbered 120 people. In 1903 and 1913, the Tula Old Believers built their church in the name of John Chrysostom, and until the construction was completed, they remained in the Church of Tikhon of Amathus. During the Soviet era, the church was closed, and in 1937 it was destroyed along with the bell tower.

After the reconstruction of the bell tower in 2014, the church reopened on the first tier, and on September 12, 2015, it was consecrated in honor of Dmitry Donskoy. The consecration was performed by Metropolitan Alexiy Kutepov of Tula and Efremov.
