The Holy Trinity Church in the city of Sudzha is celebrating its 200th anniversary, having been built in 1811. Although the city is small, with a population of less than eight thousand, the church impresses with its size: the height from the floor to the dome is 23 meters, and the total area of the premises reaches about 500 square meters. During the Soviet era, the church building housed a warehouse for the "Zagotzerno" office.

When Father Evgeny took on the restoration of the church, it was in terrible condition: "Imagine, trees had grown on the bell tower!" He began a major renovation, and during the installation of plumbing in the churchyard, just three meters from the watchman's lodge where he settled with his family, human remains were discovered.

This was an echo of war. The church burned all night, and residents of the surrounding streets heard the dying moans and screams of hundreds of wounded Hungarians, who were locked in the Trinity Church and set on fire, with all exits tightly closed. The Germans retreated in haste and did not care for their wounded allies.

Since 1943, the Holy Trinity Church in Sudzha literally stood on bones. Until recently, shells, human ribs, and vertebrae were found in the altar, under the altar table, until permission was obtained from the Hungarian Ministry of Defense for the exhumation of the remains. Several hundred skeletons were buried near the church in a mass grave under a cross. A cruel death reconciled them with the Russian land, which they came to as uninvited guests.
