The wooden church with a bell tower in the village of Verkhnyaya-Borovaya Potudany, in the Lower-Devitsa district of the Voronezh province, was built in 1859. During the Soviet period, during collectivization, it was closed and used as a grain storage facility. During the occupation by German-fascist troops, Red Army prisoners were held here. The church was destroyed by bombing during the war. After the war, the remaining materials from the church were used to build an eight-year school. In 1970, an orphanage for children from remote areas of the Potudansky village council was opened in the former church building. In 1998, the old church building was demolished. Raisa Nikitichna Pokutneva recalls that the church was located where the current school cafeteria is, and she was baptized there at the age of five.

On October 22, 2016, the laying of the cornerstone for the future church of Saint George the Victorious took place in the village of Potudany. The ceremony was conducted by Metropolitan John of Belgorod and Stary Oskol. In his speech, he noted that the current generation has an important mission to restore what was destroyed, emphasizing that everything in Russia began with God's blessing. He expressed hope that the new church would become a symbol of the striving for well-being and spiritual enlightenment, and that the patronage of Saint George the Victorious would be felt by all.

After the prayers, Bishop John, putting on work gloves and taking a trowel, descended into the trench and laid the first bricks in the foundation. He was followed by Vitaly Vasilyevich Afanasyev, the deputy head of the Stary Oskol urban district, and Archpriest Vasily Rachok, the dean of the 2nd Stary Oskol district.

The construction of the church is overseen by the Slavyanka group of companies, headed by the chairman of the board of directors, Dmitry Sergeyevich Gusev. The company has been supervising the local agricultural enterprise 'Potudany' for almost 20 years and maintains close ties with the residents. In 2015, the residents appealed to the regional Duma deputy Sergey Arkadyevich Gusev with a request to build a church, which they decided to dedicate to Saint George the Victorious, the patron of not only warriors but also farmers.
