The first wooden George Church was built in the village of Afonyevka in 1792, and in 1912 a stone church was erected and consecrated in its place. In 1962, the parish was closed, and the church building was handed over to the collective farm. It was used as a warehouse until the 2000s. In the summer of 2006, at the initiative of local residents, it was decided to restore the George Church. One of the reasons for this was the so-called "Afonyev Miracle," an icon that appears in the window opening of the bell tower. Currently, services are held in the church, and it houses the temple icon of St. George the Victorious with a relic of his incorruptible remains.
