Not far from the city of Essentuki, in the area of Yasnaya Polyana at the foot of Mount Dubrovka, lies the home of Konstantin Maksimovich Aslanov. In 1998, he conceived the idea of building an Orthodox church on the summit. This idea was supported by his brother Pavel Vladimirovich Muzenitov, who had a background in construction, as well as their relatives, friends, and acquaintances. With the blessing of Metropolitan Gideon of Stavropol and Vladikavkaz, the first stone was laid on November 16 of the same year. In the spring of the following year, active construction began, financed by the personal funds of the founders and donations from local residents and patrons. The local administration also provided support to the builders.
A year after the first stone was laid, services began in the under-construction George Cathedral. Every Sunday, local clergy and priests from Kislovodsk conducted a water blessing service. The site for the cathedral was chosen deliberately, as many compare Dubrovka to the biblical Mount Tabor.
In 2003, Bishop Theophan, the successor of Metropolitan Germogen, visited the construction site. He inspected the building and decided that the new cathedral would become the foundation of the first women's monastery in the region. From that moment, the Stavropol and Vladikavkaz diocese took on the task of finding funds and overseeing the construction. Three years after the decision to establish the St. George Women's Monastery, the first nuns arrived at Mount Dubrovka, led by the future abbess Varvara. Later, six more sisters joined them. Until 2008, they lived in a construction trailer, enduring all the hardships of daily life.
The main church of the St. George Monastery is designed in the Byzantine style. The majestic red brick building is faced with white Ural marble. It is shaped like a cross, with a large light drum and a semicircular dome rising above the intersection. A semicircular apse adjoins the eastern facade. The external decoration of the church is characterized by minimalism and strict lines.
The interior decoration was completed in 2012. Marble is used for the flooring and the columns supporting the dome, which are adorned with gilded carvings. The carved iconostasis, frescoes, and most of the icons were created by local artisans under the guidance of Vyacheslav Simakov and Andrei Bukhnikashvili. A large gilded chandelier hangs under the dome. The floor of the central area is decorated with a marble Bethlehem star.
The cathedral houses a large collection of icons, among which the images of the Mother of God "Theodorovskaya," "All-Merciful," and "The Living Source" are especially venerated. The main relics of the monastery include a particle of the relics of St. George the Victorious and a fragment of his chiton, as well as the relics of Seraphim of Sarov, Jonah of Kiev, Luke of Simferopol, and a cross with the relics of all the Diveyevo women.
Simultaneously with the church, a tall ornate bell tower was built, consisting of three arched tiers topped with a gilded dome.
The monastery complex includes:
A sisterhood building made of red brick, which houses the cells of the nuns, facilities for the children's shelter "Sophia," utility rooms, and a guesthouse.
A water blessing chapel with a spring, where cold water can be collected. Water containers are sold here as well.
A baptismal chapel for the baptism and washing of pilgrims.
An icon shop, where holy images and products made by the monastery are sold.
The area around the church is paved with tiles, and the slopes are decorated with natural stone. A large parking lot is equipped near the monastery, from which beautiful stairs lead up.
