After the lifting of restrictions on Old Believer spirituality in 1905, several families of ancient Orthodox believers donated their land in the center of Lgov for the construction of a church. Soon, with the donations from parishioners, a magnificent church was built in honor of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica.

The church, designed in an eclectic architectural style, endured difficult times when Christians and their sanctuaries were destroyed across the country. Even during the Great Patriotic War, the church's utensils were preserved from fascist marauders, allowing visitors today to see a magnificent iconostasis and ancient icons with stunning paintings. In 1989, thanks to the efforts of Father Ioann, the iconostasis was fully restored and covered in gold leaf.

On November 8, 2005, an important event occurred for the Old Believer Christians of Lgov: the church in honor of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica celebrated its centenary.
