In the 18th century, the only attraction of the village was the Dmitrievskaya Church. The villagers and residents of nearby villages visited it on holidays for prayer, and in the autumn, they gathered for the Dmitrievskaya fair. The fair took place on the elevated church square in the center of the village, near the Seym River, and was known for its lively trading of local products and industrial goods brought from nearby villages.

According to archival data, the church was originally wooden. Between 1865 and 1870, it was rebuilt from local bricks, and from 1895 to 1906, it was expanded with funds from the parishioners and the local zemstvo of Karyzh and the village of Khodyakovka. The bell tower, 32 meters high, was built separately. According to the memories of Nikolai Nikitovich Makhoty, a bell ringer from Karyzh, there were five bells of different sizes in the bell tower. The largest of them, weighing 53 poods, was made in Konotop by the Kitayaryov brothers and was known for its melodious sound, which could be heard up to 15 kilometers away. Next to the church was a cemetery where priests and notable villagers were buried.

The church territory was surrounded by a high brick wall with two gates. In 1932, the process of dekulakization began, and in 1933, the Dmitrievskaya Church was dismantled. The bricks were used to build the state bank and maternity hospital in the village of Glushkovo, and the remaining bricks were used to start building a seven-year school on the church square, but the war interrupted its completion. Gravel was used to strengthen the banks of the Seym. Church property was taken to Glushkovo. The last priest of the church was Voinov Vasily Pavlovich, an educated man who served for about 10 years. After the church was closed, he moved to Kharkiv.

On April 14, 1999, at the request of the Orthodox residents of Karyzh, the parish of St. Demetrius of Thessalonica was established. On that day, priest Evgeny Alexandrovich Sorokin arrived in the village. They had to start from scratch. At the request of Father Evgeny and the believers, the administration transferred the building of the former feldsher-midwife station to the community. A large amount of work was done: they demolished the interior partitions, removed debris, arranged the altar, iconostasis, and sacristy, purchased church utensils, and much more. In 2002, the church was gifted a bell weighing 250 kg.
