The village of Shchegolek, located in the Belovsky district of the Kursk region, was founded no later than the 1680s. It is situated in one of the most picturesque corners of the region, surrounded by forests, ravines, gardens, and streams. Many birds inhabit this area, and the air is filled with the scents of herbs.

The church in honor of St. Michael the Archangel was built in 1783 and is the oldest wooden structure in the Belovsky district. It is located in the center of the village and can be seen from any point within it. The church has three domes and three entrances, the main one adorned with icons of Archangel Michael and St. George the Victorious.

Outside, the church is painted light blue. It was closed only once, but for just a year. At the request of the villagers, the church was reopened and has not been closed since. During the war, the Nazis rounded up almost all the villagers and residents of neighboring villages in the church, intending to set the building on fire, but for some reason, they did not succeed. People believe that their prayers saved them.

The only time the church was closed was in 1950, when local authorities used it for grain storage. However, at the insistence of the parishioners, the church was soon reopened.
