Kivai, a village in the Klintsy district of the Bryansk region, is located in the Medvedovsky rural settlement, 18 km southeast of the city of Klintsy. Before the Great Patriotic War, it was primarily inhabited by Ukrainians. The village was founded no later than the first half of the 17th century and is first mentioned as a village in 1683. From the second half of the 17th century, it was owned by the Starodub magistrate, and from 1705 it belonged to the Golembyov family, and later to the Ragusins, Borozdny, and other owners. The parish of the Church of St. Michael the Archangel is known since 1767; in 1852, a stone church building was constructed with funds from Borozdny, which was closed in the first half of the 20th century and has not survived. Until 1781, Kivai was part of the Novomestskaya hundred of the Starodub regiment, from 1782 it belonged to the Surazh district, and from the early 19th century, to the Novozybkov district, becoming part of the Velikotopal volost in 1861.
