The village of Zheshart is located on the right bank of the Vychegda River. Archaeologists have discovered bronze items here, dating back to approximately the 7th-9th centuries.

The settlement is first mentioned in the late 16th century. It was quite large for that time, with about 40 peasant households. The village had two churches: the Church of St. Elijah the Prophet and the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. There were four households for church servants associated with the churches. The exact date of the construction of the Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is unknown.

By 1926, the population of Zheshart exceeded one and a half thousand people. The village included about 400 households and was the largest on the Lower Vychegda River. During the war, services continued in the Church of St. Elijah the Prophet. In 1961, Zheshart was granted the status of an urban-type settlement. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is still functioning today.
