The Church of the Prophet Elijah in the village of Verkhososna is a monument of wooden architecture from the 18th century.

In 1637, a border fort was built in the upper reaches of the Tikhaya Sosna River's tributary, the Sosenka, which transformed into the fortified town of Verkhososensk nine years later.

In 1648, a wooden Trinity Church was erected in this town, which has not survived to this day. It was also associated with a wooden Nativity Church, which also did not endure.

The Church of the Prophet God Elijah, built in 1762, has survived to this day without significant architectural changes, although its location has changed and it has been partially renovated. It is known that in 1792, a priest named Dmitry Pereverzev served in the church.

Services in the church were held continuously until 1932, after which the building was used as a grain warehouse. When the lower logs of the structure began to rot, the church was abandoned.

In 1996, at the invitation of His Eminence John, restorers arrived in Verkhososna, who disassembled the church log by log, moved it further away from the busy highway, and restored it to its original appearance. Today, the Elijah Church is the only one remaining of the four that once adorned Verkhososna and is the only one on the Belgorod border that remembers the times of its founding.
