The Church of the Prophet Elijah in Stary Oskol, built in the second half of the 19th century in eclectic style, is a monument of architecture. It was erected in 1872 in the Yezdetskaya sloboda and consecrated on November 26, 1873. The funds for the construction of the stone church were collected by parishioners and state peasants of the sloboda. From the preserved records of the church, the names of its creators are known: architect Yeremeyev and master Alexey Kochanov, both from the Yezdetskaya sloboda.

The church is located in the northern part of the sloboda, where ancient postal routes to Voronezh and Kursk once converged. By the end of the 19th century, the parish had 1,134 members, and a literacy school and a one-class zemstvo school operated at the church.

The Church of the Prophet Elijah, which withstood the pre-war repressions, did not suffer significant damage during the military actions in the city and region. For more than 30 years, from 1961 to 1992, the well-known spiritual leader and preacher Archpriest Vladimir Ott served here. He tirelessly conducted services, heard confessions, and administered communion to the sick, and was loved and respected by the residents of Stary Oskol. Father Vladimir completed his earthly journey on July 29, 1992, and was buried at the walls of the Ilyinsky Church.

On September 17, 1991, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and all Russia visited the church. The church houses the icon of the Most Holy Theotokos "Consolation and Comfort," a copy of which was brought 150 years ago from the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos. On the back of the icon, 25 names of donors, natives of Stary Oskol, are listed, including the name of the famous Athonite, hieroschemamonk Hieronymus (Solomentsev), the spiritual leader of the brotherhood of the St. Panteleimon Monastery. In total, more than 40 residents of Stary Oskol served on Athos.
