In the oldest part of the city, between Voskresenskaya and Dublyanskaya streets (now III International and Kolkhoznaya), five hundred meters south of the Afanasyevskaya church, stood the Ilyinskaya church on a steep hill. This stone church with multicolored glass was built in 1737 by merchant Fyodor Ovchinnikov. From the church began Ilyinskaya street, which during Soviet times was renamed first to Stalin street, and then to Kuibyshev.

Before the October Revolution, the priest at the Ilyinskaya church was Vissarion Kurdyumov, the father of the famous physicist and State Prize laureate G.V. Kurdyumov, who was honored with the title of Hero of Socialist Labor.

Today, the only reminders of the destroyed church are the crooked stone steps leading up the steep hill where the church once stood, and the preserved stone church house at 31 M. Gorky street.
