The church dedicated to the prophet Elijah was built in 1789 on the site of the former Znamensky gates of the Omsk fortress. The construction was initiated by the former commander, Major General Nikolai Gavriilovich Ogarev, and carried out by military personnel. The plan and facade of the church were provided by an unknown person at an unknown time.

In the 1880s, merchant G.D. Kuzmin added an altar on the northern side of the church in honor of the Protection of the Mother of God, and in 1887, merchant G.I. Terekhov added an altar on the southern side, dedicated to the holy martyr and healer Panteleimon. The square in front of the church was named Ilyinskaya.

In 1935, the church was destroyed, and a mound was erected in its place, on which a monument to V.I. Lenin was installed. The square was also renamed in his honor. In the early 2000s, with funds from the Union of Entrepreneurs of the Omsk Region, a chapel was built on the site of the former Ilyin Church.
