The village of Gam is the administrative center of the Ustyug-Vym district. The first mentions of human presence in these places date back to the 10th-12th centuries, as evidenced by the burial mounds that have survived here.

Gam is first mentioned as a village in 1586, when it had 49 households, 8 of which were empty. The houses were scattered across the area at some distance from each other. In years of poor harvests, when agriculture, the main occupation of the locals, yielded no results, residents would leave the village, sometimes even known where they went.

In 1704, the first wooden church was built in Gam. After 70 years, it was dismantled due to decay. In 1771, a new wooden church was erected with an altar in the name of the Resurrection of Christ. In 1834, the construction of a stone church began, lasting almost 20 years and completed in 1851. The Church of St. Michael the Archangel had two tiers: the lower tier with the altar of Archangel Michael and the upper tier with the altar of the Resurrection of Christ.

Today, the Church of St. Michael the Archangel is in a preserved state. The door is locked, some windows still have grilles, but the roof is almost completely destroyed. Inside, there is desolation, and information about the church utensils has not survived.
