The John the Theologian Church in the village of Platonovo, previously known as Bogoslovskoye and located on the elevated left bank of the Optukha River, is one of the oldest parishes in the Oryol district. The first mentions of it appear in the land registry book of clerk Sofonov Leontiy and scribe Yakovlev Dementiy from 1594-1595.

The church was mentioned in the church records of the Oryol district in 1734 and 1755. In 1755, there were about 100 parish households associated with the church. In 1804, at the initiative of landowner Medvedev V. A., the current stone single-altar church was built, replacing the old wooden one. It was consecrated in honor of St. John the Theologian and Evangelist.

Until the early 20th century, the church did not undergo any major renovations, only updates as needed. In 1905, a new iconostasis was installed. The sacristy housed two Gospels published in 1716 and 1725. Since 1897, a church parish school for literacy operated in the village of Lunevo.

The church was closed in the 1930s and reopened in 1963. After repairs, it was consecrated again on October 9, 1995.
