The church of the apostle and evangelist John the Theologian was built behind the Kherson gates, near the marketplace, where a wooden church once stood. It was consecrated in 1809 and served as a cemetery church, first in wooden form and then in stone.

The church building is single-story, with two levels of light and one dome, complemented by a four-tiered bell tower. The central part of the temple is a massive rectangular volume with four pillars, topped with a bell tower and a dome square with a closed vault. The main dome, resembling a mushroom, is set on a high base, and the windows have arched finishes with wide profiling.

In the 1930s, after the church was closed, the bell tower was destroyed. During the German occupation at the end of 1941, the church was reopened, but it was closed again in 1950. The building housed warehouses for a military unit and the Central Universal Store. The last consecration took place in 1989. The church has three altars: the main one dedicated to John the Theologian, as well as to the holy great martyr Barbara and Saint Panteleimon the Healer. In 1992, the bell tower was restored.

The church is a monument of local architectural significance.
