The church is registered with the regional commission for cultural heritage and included in the list of the resolution No. 510 of the Voronezh region administration dated April 18, 1994, "On measures for the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of the Voronezh region" under number 1156. It is located on the outskirts of the village, south of the cemetery. The construction of the stone church in honor of Saint John the Theologian with a side altar in honor of St. Alexander Svirsky began in 1790. The church was consecrated in 1796, and in 1883, due to lack of space, side chapels were added on both sides. The new chapels housed altars: in the southern chapel, in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, and in the northern, in the name of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. The first altar was consecrated in 1889, the second and the main altar in 1890. Thus, from 1883 to 1890, side chapels and altars were added to the original part of the church built in 1790. The refectory and bell tower may have been built in these years or after 1907.

From the original structure of the church, a large square base with an octagonal light drum, dome, and an octagonal small light drum has been preserved. A long refectory, which is somewhat wider and lower, adjoins the square base. A tall four-tiered bell tower completes the western part of the composition. The first tier, equal in height to the refectory, has the shape of a square; the second, short attic tier, is also square; the third and fourth tiers of the bell, octagonal with narrow diagonal faces. Above the upper tier is another attic blind tier, which served as the base for the bell tower's dome.

The church was closed in the 1930s and used as a warehouse. At that time, ropes were thrown over the church cross, and an attempt was made to topple it with two tractors, but they only bent it. According to locals, all participants in this sacrilege died within a year. Not far from the church is a holy healing spring in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God.

In 2011, a parish was established, the foundation for a new building was laid, and in 2015, a wooden church was built. On November 24, 2018, a dome and bell were installed on the bell tower of the ancient church in honor of Saint John the Theologian in the village of Kuchugury, which were consecrated on November 21. The funds for their production and installation were provided by a local deputy. The height of the dome, including the spire, is 9 meters.
