In the city of New Delhi, India, an Orthodox church is being built in honor of St. Thomas the Apostle. It will be located on the grounds of the embassy compound, initiated by the Russian Orthodox Church with the blessing of Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and all Rus.

For many years, at the request of compatriots temporarily or permanently residing in India, clergy from the Department for External Church Relations conducted services in the buildings of Russian diplomatic missions. A parish community has formed in New Delhi, where services are held in a small house church set up in the residential area of the Russian embassy.

From December 3 to 10, 2006, Metropolitan Cyril of Smolensk and Kaliningrad led a delegation of the Russian Orthodox Church to India. Under his chairmanship, a meeting of the initiative group took place, where it was decided to create an Orthodox community of St. Thomas the Apostle in New Delhi.

On December 4, 2006, on the feast of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple, Metropolitan Cyril conducted the Divine Liturgy on the territory of the Russian embassy. After the service, he presented the new community with an icon of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple and a set of liturgical Menaions, and then consecrated the cornerstone of the future church.

From 2006 to 2014, the construction of the church was in its initial stages, and services were held only on major holidays in the house church. In 2013, after negotiations between President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh, the construction project moved into an active phase.

The main parishioners of the church are Russian compatriots and representatives of other Slavic peoples living or traveling in India.
