On May 22, 1732, Archbishop Irodion (Zhurakovsky) of Chernihiv solemnly consecrated the church in the name of St. Nicholas. This was the second church built in the center of the settlement of Ropsk. The height of the building from the ground to the top of the cross on the central dome reaches thirty-seven meters.

In 1937, the church was closed and used as a warehouse. However, with the arrival of the German occupiers, it was reopened.

Since 1943, services have resumed in the church, and it has not been closed since then.

The original tall four-tiered iconostasis has not survived. The modern assembled iconostasis dates back to the first half of the 20th century, the royal gates to the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, and the icons to the 18th-20th centuries.
