The stone church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, located in the village of Neznamovo, now part of the city of Stary Oskol, was built in 1895. In 1908, the parish had 828 parishioners, two zemstvo schools and one church parish school were operating, and there were 10 desyatins of land. Currently, a chapel is being built on the church grounds in honor of the icon of the Mother of God "Joy of All Who Sorrow."

The church miraculously avoided destruction during the Great Patriotic War. The village of Neznamovo was under occupation from July 3, 1942, to January 29, 1943. On the day of liberation, January 29, 1943, there was a severe frost. The liberation of the village was carried out by the 107th Rifle Division under the command of Major General Pyotr Maksimovich Bezhko, which was part of the 40th Army of the Voronezh Front led by Lieutenant General of Artillery Kirill Semyonovich Moskalenko. The first to reach the area of the village council were 30 of our ski shooters, who were killed under enemy machine-gun fire, which was positioned in the church bell tower. The commander of the artillery battery was ordered to destroy this machine-gun position. Under direct artillery fire, the church could have been destroyed, but thanks to Divine Providence, the order was adjusted: to conduct a circular bombardment without hitting the church. As a result, the enemy machine-gun position was destroyed, and the church remained intact. The feat of the commander and his battery was passed down from mouth to mouth for many years, although their names are forgotten, the people's memory preserved their heroism.

During the preparation of the bell tower for major repairs, many empty German and Hungarian machine-gun cartridges were found in the debris. The dents on the bricks of the church walls remain witnesses to the fierce battle for the liberation of the village of Neznamovo, which became a foothold for the liberation of Stary Oskol.

After the battle, the fallen soldiers were buried with honors in a mass grave. In 2010, to mark the 65th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, a monument to the soldier was erected at the site of the old memorial, commemorating the fallen soldiers. The author of this memorial composition is the famous Belgorod sculptor, Honored Artist of Russia Anatoly Alexandrovich Shishkov.
