The church was built by Cossacks in 1826 according to the design of the architect brothers Bernardazzi. It is a wooden structure. The church had a parish school, almshouse, library, and archive. The church remained active even during the Soviet era.

The church houses a holy relic of St. Sergius of Radonezh. Nearby, there used to be a small cemetery, but now it is a vacant lot. The St. Nicholas Church contains memorial plaques with the names of Cossacks who distinguished themselves in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878, the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, as well as those who died in Chechnya.
