In the village of Afanasovo, a church was built in 1914 in honor of Saint Joasaph of Belgorod. The funds for its construction were collected by the parishioners. It was a beautiful wooden building with three domes and a bell tower.

In 1922, during the Soviet regime, the church was closed and used for the agricultural needs of the local collective farm. During the Great Patriotic War, the building was partially destroyed, and after the war, it was completely dismantled.

A new stone chapel in honor of Saint Joasaph was built with funds from the Closed Joint-Stock Company "Agrofirma 'Rus'" and was consecrated by Archbishop Ioann on September 21, 2011, the birthday of Saint Joasaph. The bishop noted that with the revival of spiritual life, the revival of the village begins.
