In 1722, a wooden church with a bell tower on a stone foundation was built in the village of Pushkarnoye, covered with iron and surrounded by a stone fence. The altar in the church was dedicated to Saints Athanasius and Cyril of Alexandria. In 1824, the building was renovated by the efforts of the parishioners, but over time it fell into disrepair, and a new stone church was not built due to the financial difficulties of the parishioners. Only in 1909 did the provincial construction department approve the project of diocesan architect V. G. Slesarev for the construction of a new church in the village of Pushkarnoye.

In 1912 or 1913, the new building was erected and consecrated in honor of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos. The old church remained a dependency of the new temple. The new structure was wooden, on a brick foundation, with two iron domes and pierced crosses. A wooden open porch and a single-tier bell tower with five bells complemented the building. Inside, there was a wooden gilded iconostasis with five tiers containing 27 icons, and a total of 60 icons in the church, of which 18 were in the altar. In 1931 or 1929, the church was closed and later used as a warehouse.

In 2000, the parish was restored in the village of Pushkarnoye, and the religious organization of the Athanasius Church was registered. However, the church building no longer exists; a grain storage facility is now located in its place.
