The first church of Mary Magdalene was consecrated in Mariupol in 1791. The church, known as the Russian or Burlatskaya, lasted for a hundred years before being dismantled. In its place, a chapel was built in memory of the rescue of heir Nicholas Alexandrovich in Japan on April 29, 1891. In 1897, a new church was built and consecrated, which, like the chapel, was destroyed in the 1930s.
