Transfiguration Church 'on the Hill' in Kaluga

Фото 1
At the entrance to Kaluga on the old Smolensk road, beyond the Berezuyev ravine, in an area known as 'Zavershye', the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord rises on a hill, referred to as 'what is on the hill'.

According to a description from 1626, the Spaso-Transfiguration Church was originally located in a fortress and was moved to its current site in 1685 as a wooden structure. The stone church we see today was built in 1700. The chapels dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and St. Nil of Stolobny were arranged by merchant Zakhar Sorokin between 1804 and 1810. The bell tower was constructed between 1776 and 1778. The original details of the facades have been preserved, but in the early 19th century they were hidden under a layer of plaster. As a result, instead of kokoshniks under the roof on three sides of the church, small semicircular niches are visible, which before the revolution housed images of saints. Beneath the classical appearance, there are also patterned brick cornices and unique ceramic window frames in the style of Naryshkin Baroque from the late 17th century.

The bell tower consists of three tiers. The inner walls of the refectory were completely painted. The iconostasis of the church and the altar painting, which have survived to this day, were created in the 18th century. The clergy were actively engaged in charitable and spiritual-educational activities. In 1898, at the initiative of the rector, Priest Alexey Makarov, a church-parish guardianship was established.

On November 13, 1899, a literacy school opened in the village of Annenki, which was attached to the Spaso-Zavershsky parish. A similar school also operated at the church on Smolensk Street. The church owned a chapel of St. Nicholas at the 'Zdorovets' spring in the Berezuyev ravine. In the 1930s, the church was served by the holy martyr Bishop Pavlin (Kroshechkin, who perished in 1937). In 1938, the church was closed, and its building was used for a printing house, warehouses, and other institutions.

On September 27, 1993, the church was transferred to the Kaluga Diocese and became a dependency of the Holy Pafnuty Borovsky Monastery. On August 19, 1994, during the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the abbot of the monastery, Archimandrite Gavriil, conducted the first Divine Liturgy in the chapel of St. Nil of Stolobny.

In 1995, services were moved to the Nikolsky chapel and are conducted according to the monastic rule. Currently, the church is actively functioning, the main altar has been restored, and the interior decoration has been updated.
