According to the 1767 census, there was an old wooden Transfiguration church in the village of Velikaya Topal, with chapels dedicated to Archangel Gabriel and St. Euphemia the Great.

In 1780, a stone church was built by order of P. A. Rumyantsev-Zadunaisky, replacing the previous wooden one. This church is a monument of church architecture from the second half of the 18th century and has been well preserved to this day. Princess Varvara Sergeyevna Golitsyna built a pyramidal bell tower 20 fathoms high and another stone church in honor of St. Nicholas in 1850, but they have not survived.

In the pre-war years, the church was closed, and its building was used as a grain storage facility. During the Great Patriotic War, the church became active again, and services resumed. It is known that on August 27, 1972, the church was consecrated by His Grace Palladius, the Metropolitan of Oryol and Bryansk, as confirmed by the signature on the antimins.

The parish library, Sunday school, and adult discussions are held at the church.
