The Novoselitsky district of Stavropol is known for one of the oldest stone churches in the region, the Transfiguration Church. After a fire in 1812 destroyed the wooden church, a decision was made to build a new one.

According to the church construction decree dated March 6, 1820, Archbishop of Astrakhan and the Caucasus Gai blessed Priest Vasily Mukhin from the Alexander Archangel Cathedral to lay the foundation for a new church in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord in the village of Novoselitsky. The church was to be built on a solid site and modeled after other Greek-Russian churches, with all necessary church items provided.

Construction was completed in 1825, and by 1845 a stone bell tower was added to the church. For over a hundred years, the church served the faithful, but with the advent of Soviet power, it was closed, and in 1937 the bells were sent for melting down. Much was destroyed, including icons and church utensils.

History preserved the name of the widow Darya Merzlikina, who lived by the church. The faithful built a hut outside the city, supposedly to protect the gardens, and every day the widow transported church relics there: chalices, crosses, icons, and Gospels. Local men discreetly guarded her. In 1943, after the persecution eased, everything that had been preserved was returned to the church. Until 1992, a gas cylinder was used instead of a bell.

Today, after restoration, the church is once again open to the faithful. The central place in the church is occupied by an iconostasis, nearly a hundred years old, painted by the artist Joseph Petrovich Volkov. The church has preserved icons created over a century ago.

A valuable relic of the Transfiguration Church is a gilded three-branched candlestick, gifted by Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna on May 14, 1896. It is located in the altar.

The church's sanctuary is the Athos icon of the Mother of God "The Merciful," to which prayers for healing, especially for children, are directed.
