The Holy Transfiguration Cathedral, built in 1909, originally served as a chapel at the city cemetery. After the 1917 revolution, it was closed. Since 1952, the Orthodox community of the city began using this chapel for services as the Ascension Church, since the city’s Ascension Cathedral in the center was closed.
On June 14, 1990, the Holy Ascension Church was returned to the faithful, and its restoration began. Since 1993, the church at the old city cemetery has been called the Holy Transfiguration Cathedral.
From 1996 to 1998, a bell tower was added to the church. In the 2000s, restoration of the church began. In 2005, a children's Sunday school and a baptistery were built at the church. In 2007, the central dome of the church was replaced, and in 2008, a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was erected next to the church.
