Church of the Descent of the Holy Spirit in Kazan

Фото 1
The winter cathedral of the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles was built between 1813 and 1815 with funds from the landowners of Karachev, the Verevkins. The church had two chapels: in honor of the Theodorov Icon of the Mother of God and the Nativity of John the Baptist. The consecration of the church took place in 1815 with the participation of Hieromonk Paul. The locally venerated icons were adorned with silver-gilded robes set with precious stones.

Particular attention was drawn to the image of the Merciful Savior, located opposite the right choir. This image was gifted by Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich as a blessing to Father Prokopy. The icon was decorated with a silver-gilded robe featuring embossed ornamentation and four large precious stones surrounded by eleven smaller ones. The robe bore the inscription: "This robe was made for the image of the Merciful Savior, granted by the blessed memory of the Great Sovereign, Tsar and Grand Duke Mikhail Fyodorovich of all Russia, with the image of the Kazan Mother of God as a blessing for this Ploshchanskaya desert to the builder Hieromonk Prokopy. And this robe was made by the donations of Christ-loving benefactors during the builder of this desert, Igumen Serapion, in 1798 on February 14; it weighs 10 pounds."

Equally famous was the copy of the Kazan Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, also in a silver-gilded robe weighing 9 pounds and 44 zolotniks. This robe was made by Monk Ion and Mr. M.A. Tarakanov during the builder Ioil. The crowns on the Savior and the Mother of God were made of silver and adorned with rock crystal. In the Theodorov Chapel, there was a local icon of the Mother of God, embedded in the board of another icon. The robe of this icon had the inscription at the top: "The Coronation of the Mother of God," and at the bottom: "The Miraculous Presentation of the Theodorov Icon of the Mother of God by the Holy Great Martyr Theodore Stratilates." The church also housed a copy of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, donated by Mrs. Neklyudova from Kamianets-Podilskyi in 1814 for the arrangement of the church.
