Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Vazhkurya

Фото 1
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located on the grounds of a men's monastery in the village of Vazhkurya, Korkeros District, Republic of Komi. Originally, there was a chapel dedicated to the Assembly of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was rebuilt and consecrated as a church in 1849. This building stood until the fire of 1875, when it was destroyed by flames. In 1878, a new one-story church building with a bell tower over the narthex was constructed. In 1890, the wooden structure was clad in planks and whitewashed, and in 1893, the interior walls were painted sky blue.

From 1907 to 1914, a stone church building was erected in the village, which served the faithful until 1938, when it was closed for worship. Church valuables and the building were nationalized and handed over to local authorities, and the structure itself was used for purposes other than its intended use. Only after 60 years did the restoration of the church begin.

In the 1990s, a skete of the Trinity-Stefano-Ulyanov Monastery was established based on the Orthodox parish in the village of Vazhkurya, which became a men's monastery in 1997. The restored church was reconsecrated on May 15, 1996, in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and was transferred to the newly formed skete in the autumn of the same year, and later to the monastery of the same name.
