Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Vazhkurya

Фото 1
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located in the village of Vazhkurya in the Kortkeros district of the Republic of Komi. It is part of the closed male monastery of the same name.

Originally, there was a chapel in the village dedicated to the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in 1700. In 1849, the chapel was expanded and consecrated as the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. However, it burned down in 1875. In 1878, a wooden one-story church with a bell tower was built in its place, which was later sheathed and painted.

The existing church building was erected between 1907 and 1914. This stone structure consists of a two-story main volume with five domes on the roof, connected to the refectory, a tiered bell tower, and a porch.

In 1938, the church was closed, and the building was used for the economic needs of local authorities. Only in the late 1990s was it partially restored for worship. The first liturgy after nearly 60 years took place on May 15, 1996, when the church was reconsecrated in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
