Church of the Nativity of Christ in Tovarkovo

Фото 1
According to the clerical report of 1901, the wooden church in honor of the Nativity of Christ was built in 1733 at the pogost thanks to the efforts of the parishioners. According to legend, an icon of the Holy Mother of God was revealed here, which floated down the river and stopped at a spring. The icon was broken, as if it consisted of two parts, and was therefore called "Lomovskaya" or "Lamskaya." Since 1882, the rector was Vladimir Efimovich Zverev. In 1896, the wooden church became dilapidated, and in March, a construction committee was formed to build a new church. The project was developed by Moscow architect Kodomtsev. The new stone single-altar church in honor of the Nativity of Christ was consecrated on October 16, 1906. In the same year, with the support of Moscow manufacturer I. A. Orlov, a stone single-tier bell tower was added to the church, and an iconostasis made of white carved marble was produced at a Moscow factory. At the end of the 19th century, the parish included the villages of Karokino, Nikolskaya Factory, Milenki, Vshivka, Sabelnikovo, Stefan'kovo, Matovo, Malaya Rudnya, and Bol'shaya Rudnya, and in 1882, the parish had 1,243 members.

In 1932, the priest of the church, Ioann Tkachenko, was arrested. In 1936, priest Vasily Yeremeev-Novikov was arrested, and on December 14, 1937, priest Matfei Volkov was executed. In 1960, the Church of the Nativity of Christ on the Ugra was closed. The miraculous icon of the Mother of God "Lomovskaya" was transferred to the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin in the village of Baryatino. The church building was initially used as a tourist base, then as a dairy factory, and later it was used as a warehouse for chemical fertilizers. The unique marble iconostasis was lost.

In the autumn of 1990, the church was handed over to the Kaluga Diocese in a semi-ruined state, and priest Nikolai Aliev was appointed as rector. In 1991, the restoration of the church began. On January 21, 1993, Archbishop Kliment of Kaluga and Borovsk consecrated the church. In 1997, parishioner L.F. Getman created a list of the miraculous Lomovskaya icon of the Mother of God, which is especially revered by the parishioners. In 1998, the church was restored, and in 1999, a bell tower was built, and on December 18 of the same year, the bells were raised. The restoration was carried out with the support of the "Strommashpolymer" plant, the Kaluga crushed stone plant, and the LLP "Sila." In the autumn of 2007, a new dome and cross were installed on the central dome of the church. From spring to autumn 2008, a new three-tier wooden iconostasis with gilding was erected. Six domes with crosses, the rafter part, and the roof of the central vault and bell tower were replaced, and the outer walls of the church were painted. Currently, the parish serves two prisons, a nursing home, and a Cossack stanitsa.
