Church of the Nativity of Christ in Lesnoye-Ukolovo

Фото 1
The church in the village of Lesnoye Ukolovo, now in the Krasnensky District of the Belgorod Region, is an architectural monument. It was built in 1830 from stone, replacing an old wooden structure from 1767. The church has a cross-shaped plan, one dome, a four-column refectory, and a two-tiered bell tower. The architecture combines Russian-Byzantine forms; however, the absence of five domes and the elongated proportions along the longitudinal axis indicate possible changes in the volumetric-spatial solution, supplemented by later extensions. All rooms are vaulted: the altar, conch, chapels, cylindrical vaults, refectory, and twelve sails. The transition from the light drum to the square is made through rounded trompes.

The main altar is dedicated to the Nativity of Christ, the right chapel to the Descent of the Holy Spirit, and the left to Saint Dmitry of Rostov. In the center of the church's ceiling hangs a chandelier, a large candlestick with many candles, which is lit during solemn moments of the service. The central part of the church symbolizes the created world, while the altar, as the realm of God's being, rises above it and is separated by the iconostasis. The iconostasis not only divides the worlds but also represents the Heavenly Church with the Lord Jesus Christ at its head. It faces the praying congregation with icons, and the word 'iconostasis' comes from the Greek words for 'image' and 'standing place.'

The church has never been closed or destroyed. It retains a cross-shaped five-tiered gilded iconostasis with two chapels, made from linden wood brought from Lipetsk. According to tradition, it was crafted by local artisans. The construction of the church was carried out by the villagers.

The tomb, ancient candlesticks, chandeliers, and many other items from the church's early days have been preserved. The two main icons of the Savior and the Mother of God were restored in 1998.

The crucifixion and several icons, such as the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem, the Quick to Hear, the Iveron Mother of God, and the Lord Almighty, were painted on Mount Athos in the Russian St. Panteleimon Monastery and adorned with silver-plated robes. The church also houses a copy of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God of Sicily, which has repeatedly saved the villagers during cholera epidemics.

The church has miraculously preserved its original form both during Soviet times and throughout the Great Patriotic War. Services here were never interrupted. Recently, the church underwent a major renovation: the roof was replaced, gilded crosses were installed on the domes, and new bells were hung in the bell tower.
