The foundation and beginning of the temple's construction date back to 1903, but it was only recently fully completed. The temple was consecrated in 2005. The interior decoration of the cave temple of St. Seraphim of Sarov includes frescoes and carved icons made on chalk rock. Services here are held only twice a year, on the days of the saint's memory.

In 1993, under the guidance of Archpriest Alexander Dolgushev, the clearing of the caves and the revival of the monastery began, and it was here that the first service took place. In 1997, the first nuns arrived in Kostomarovo, transferred from the Zadonsk Monastery: Seraphima, Iosaf, and Dionysius. On April 1, 1999, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church approved the Statute of the Kostomarovo Spassky Women's Diocesan Monastery.

From the area in front of the temple, there is a view of the monastery's refectory and the igumen's house. A little further is the economic yard, and on the slope of the hill is the local 'Gethsemane Garden.'
