Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Stary Oskol

Фото 1
On the banks of the Oskol River in the Old Mill district, there now stands a rotunda with a miniature copy of the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin. This model is installed at the site where the Intercession Church once stood, destroyed during the Great Patriotic War.

The exact date of the foundation of the Intercession Church is unknown, but the Oskol Watch Book from 1615 mentions that "to the east of the city walls, in the settlement of the white Cossacks, a wooden two-altar church was built in the name of Cosmas and Damian with an altar in honor of the Annunciation of the Holy Virgin." If you compare a modern map of the city with historical data, you can see that the church was located at the intersection of the present-day streets of Oktyabrskaya and Komsomolskaya.

In 1781, at the request of the parishioners, the construction of a three-altar stone church began at a new location. The church was erected by the Oskol River at the intersection of Kosmodemyanskaya and Belgorodskaya streets (now Kommunisticheskaya and Komsomolskaya). The construction was completed in 1783. According to tradition, the main altar was consecrated in honor of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin instead of the abolished Intercession Church of the suburban Yzdoc settlement. The right altar was consecrated in the name of Saints Cosmas and Damian, and the left one in 1797, in the name of the Venerable Anthony and Theodosius of the Kiev Caves. The bell tower and the church were built in the same year, and in 1857, six bells were replaced with new ones, as noted in the Metric of the Intercession Church from 1887. By the end of the 19th century, the church had 1,640 parishioners.

With the arrival of Soviet power, church valuables began to be confiscated from the church, and in the 1930s, worship services were banned. The building suffered greatly during the war, and in the post-war period, it was finally dismantled for bricks.
