Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sosnovka

Фото 1
The church dedicated to the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary is located in the center of the village on a small square where two main streets intersect. According to local residents, it was built between 1880 and 1885. The walls of the church, erected on a brick foundation, are made of logs and covered with planking. Today, the five-domed completion and bell tower have been lost. This small wooden church, characterized by its modest appearance, is designed in a cross-shaped style that was widely spread in Bryansk region in the 19th century.

Its volumetric-planning composition includes four rectangular arms, with the altar arm being slightly smaller than the others. All arms have gable roofs with pediments on the ends. A narthex adjoins the refectory, which serves as the first tier of the bell tower, also with a gable roof and pediment. The facades of the side wings, following the traditional three-axis arrangement of openings with entrances in the center, previously had columned porticoes supporting the pediments, which have now been replaced by paired consoles made of poles. The modest decoration of the facades includes horizontal planking of the walls, simple framed window surrounds, and cornices. The interior of the church, with a fully open altar, side arms, and refectory, forms a unified space. The narthex connects to the refectory through an entrance opening.
