The construction of the Intercession Church in Mtsensk began in June 2007. The architect envisioned the church in a style reminiscent of the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl.

The church serves as a memorial to the soldiers who fell in battles for the city and region during all past wars, especially the Great Patriotic War. It was here in 1941 that a tank brigade commanded by Mikhail Katukov held back the advance of the elite German tank divisions of Guderian.

In 2005, a group of residents from district "V" of Mtsensk appealed to the diocesan administration with a request to open a parish. The preparation of the necessary documents began. In the spring of 2006, the parish of the memorial church was officially registered, and later land was allocated for its construction. By the end of 2010, the church building had been raised to the roof level, and services began in its basement.
