Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin in Krasnoe

The village of Krasnoe got its name due to the pine forests that were part of the Kozlov estate of the Ascension Monastery in Moscow during the 17th-18th centuries. From the surviving parish records, it is known that a wooden church in Krasnoe existed as early as the 17th century. The first Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, built in 1695 with funds from local peasants using logs from a dismantled church in the village of Suponevo, burned down along with the village. However, the icon of the Smolensk Mother of God miraculously survived. The peasants soon restored the village and built a new church a little away from the previous site. In 1818, when the church became dilapidated, the parishioners erected a stone building. There is a legend that once merchants argued about wealth and paved the road from the old wooden church to the new stone one with gold coins.

In 1875, a two-tiered stone bell tower was added to the church. Since the central hall could not accommodate all the parishioners, in 1894, with funds from peasant Emelyan Senin, who became wealthy from timber trade, northern and southern chapels were built. They connected to the church with wide arches, giving its layout unique outlines. In the right chapel, an altar was arranged in the name of Archangel Michael, and in the left, in the name of the Holy Trinity. Since 1886, a church school operated at the church. In 1895, parishioners acquired three new iconostases.

The central part of the church, rising above the chapels, refectory, and altar, is executed in the style of mature classicism. The architecture of the church is extremely simplified, without porticos and rich stucco. The modest height of the building harmonizes with the surrounding one-story rural development. The main revered icon of the church was the image of the Smolensk Mother of God. Residents also turned to the relics from neighboring churches. According to written accounts, in 1847, a cholera epidemic struck the village of Krasnoe. At that time, the widow of the local priest, Maria Nikolaevna, requested to bring the icon of Saints Cyril and Athanasius of Alexandria from the village of Lopush. After a procession with this icon, the epidemic ceased.

The Intercession Church was closed in 1934, and the bells were removed. It was said that when the large bell was taken down, it was dropped to the ground, breaking through the roof and sinking two meters into the earth. The bell's toll could be heard from 10-15 km away. The church was converted into a grain warehouse. In 1943, services resumed. In 1945, an extension was built on the foundation of the former bell tower, the cemetery was enclosed with a picket fence, and oak crosses were installed on the domes. In 1950, a new wooden bell tower was built, of which the lower tier with the main entrance to the church has survived. In 1951-52, repairs were carried out: the roof was covered with new iron and painted green, the walls were whitewashed, and the interior was painted with oil paint, three chandeliers were purchased. In 1968, the central iconostasis was restored in three tiers. The icons were painted by artist Grigory Petrovich Kovalenko from Chernigov, and the festive row by Pavel Ilyich Kostenets from Bryansk. In 1971, the iconostasis of the left chapel and four kiots were made. From 1943 until the early 1990s, the church in the village of Krasnoe was the only functioning church in the territory of the Vygonichsky district.
