The construction of the church in honor of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin began in 1834 thanks to donations from merchant V.F. Melnikov, the owner of an iron foundry. By 1846, the church was fully erected. Since it was a cathedral, services were held daily. The church housed three altars: the central one in honor of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin and side chapels dedicated to the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul and Saint Nicholas. In 1937, the church was closed, and the clergy were arrested. During the Great Patriotic War, services resumed, but only for a short time: in 1960, the church was closed again, the refectory was turned into a school gym, and the central part was used as a trading base. In 1989, at the request of the faithful, the building was returned to the Russian Church, and restoration work began. In September of the same year, Bishop Paisiy of Oryol and Bryansk consecrated the altar of the church in honor of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin.
