The Church of Panteleimon, known in Novgorod as Nikolai Kochanovskaya or Nikolai Kochanova, is located at the intersection of Yakovleva and Tikhvinskaya streets, on the Sofia side, in the historic Nerev end.

It is named after Saint Nikolai Kochanov, who was born in Novgorod in the 14th century and died on July 27, 1392. According to his will, he was buried at the edge of the cemetery near the Jacob Cathedral, close to the road.

In 1554, a stone church was built over his grave, consecrated in honor of the healer Panteleimon, which the locals called Nikolai Kochanovskaya.

During the Swedish occupation in 1610 and 1617, the church was destroyed, but in 1617 it was restored with funds from the townspeople and the Sofia Cathedral. In 1772, a new gilded iconostasis appeared in the church, and in 1773, a refectory and an altar dedicated to Saint Dmitry, the Metropolitan of Rostov, were added.

In 1829, the church was renovated both inside and out: it was covered with sheet iron and paved with Putilov tiles. Archimandrite Makary Mirolubov mentions that Emperor Nicholas I named his third son Nikolai in honor of Saint Nikolai Kochanov, expressing special favor towards Novgorod.

Since 1832, the imperial family began to pay more attention to the church, allocating significant funds for its maintenance and decoration. By the mid-19th century, only part of the original structure from 1554 remained, where the relics of Nikolai Kochanov were located.

In the 19th century, a zemstvo hospital was located opposite the church, and priests visited the sick. Some who died in the hospital were buried in the church cemetery. In the 1930s, the building was used as a hospital morgue and laundry. After the war, the church was extensively rebuilt and handed over to the city sanitary and epidemiological station.

100 meters to the south is the Church of the Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God. In December 2012, the sanitary and epidemiological station was evicted, and the church building was transferred to the Novgorod Diocese. Restoration work is currently underway in the church of St. Panteleimon the Great Martyr, and every Saturday, a Divine Liturgy is held, led by Priest Mikhail Tereshchuk.
