On October 14, 2005, on the day of the celebration of the Protection of the Holy Virgin, a new church of Archangel Michael was consecrated in Maloarkhangelsk, the construction of which began in 1999.

It is known that the village of Arkhangelskoye, which became a district town and was renamed Maloarkhangelsk in 1778, got its name thanks to the wooden church of Archangel Michael. The further fate of this church is unknown; it probably burned down, as only two churches are mentioned in 1847: the Cathedral and the Sretenskaya.

Documents from the Soviet period regarding the fight against religion in Maloarkhangelsk record the closure and destruction of three churches: Sretenskaya, Voskresenskaya, and the Ascension Cathedral. There are no mentions of the church of Archangel Michael.

The modern church has become one of the main attractions of the city thanks to the initiative of local residents. In the 1990s, the Oryol-Liven diocese sent a priest, Father Vasily, to the city, who held services in the building of a brick factory.

In 1997, a city assembly decided to build a church, and a location near the city park was chosen. The construction was funded by donations from individuals, organizations, and authorities, with significant support from local farms and the district administration.

The construction was completed in 2005. In May 2009, Maloarkhangelsk became the center for the celebration of the Days of Slavic Writing and Culture in the Oryol region. After the liturgy and procession, an official part took place, where the Bishop of Oryol and Livny, Hieronymus, presented patriarchal awards. For their contribution to the construction of the Archangel Michael Church, notable local figures were awarded by the Russian Orthodox Church. The Order of the Holy Blessed Prince Daniel of Moscow III degree was awarded to the head of the district administration Oleg Revyakin. The Order of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Princess Olga III degree was awarded to director Nina Kononova. The Order of the Holy Blessed Prince Daniel of Moscow III degree was awarded to general directors Viktor Esipov, Solis Karakotov, and Anatoly Butorin.
