The stone chapel in honor of Archangel Gabriel was built on the initiative of the governor of Belgorod region, E.S. Savchenko, and the project of architect N.A. Molchanov. The construction was completed by the time the new complex of Belgorod State University was opened. On November 2, 2001, the university became one of the Russian higher education institutions with its own chapel. On this day, Archbishop John of Belgorod and Stary Oskol consecrated the chapel in honor of Archangel Gabriel, who is now considered the spiritual patron of the university's students.

The main task of the chapel is to interact with and provide spiritual support to students and staff of Belgorod State University, counteracting negative influences in the student environment and introducing youth to traditional values and spiritual ideals of Holy Russia.

The liturgical activities of the chapel include conducting scheduled services on certain days, as well as performing sacraments and rites.

The missionary work of the chapel is expressed in organizing conferences, seminars, lectures, discussions, and round tables for students and faculty of Belgorod State University and other universities in Belgorod. The topics of these events are related to the spiritual and moral revival of the individual, family, nation, and state. The parish also organizes screenings of Orthodox films followed by discussions.

The Chapel of Archangel Gabriel is part of the association of chapels at universities in Russia, established with the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and all Russia.
