The Assumption Church in the village of Kaplino became the first church built in the Belgorod region after the collapse of the USSR. It was erected in 1993 in honor of the 400th anniversary of Stary Oskol and became the first new church in the Starooskol land.

In 1995, the church was handed over to the Orthodox Brotherhood of St. Onuphrius, and since then, funeral rites and memorial services have been held here daily. Archpriest Alexander Boguta, who leads the brotherhood, began the painting of the church's interior walls. He worked alongside icon painters from Pochaev. The frescoes, completed over five years, are dedicated to gospel themes corresponding to the church's name: The Carrying of the Cross, The Crucifixion, The Burial of Christ, The Burial of the Mother of God. The works are done in the style of Vasnetsov.

The church is small, with red brick walls, situated on a high platform accessed by stairs from the west and south.
