The chapel of Alexander Nevsky, belonging to the Oryol and Livny diocese, is located in the city of Livny in the Oryol region.

The brick church of Alexander Nevsky was built between 2011 and 2013 at the initiative of Ataman Alexander Alexandrovich Fetisov of the Oryol Cossack Economic Union. It is situated next to the "Cossack Stan" cafe on the bypass road of Livny. On July 19, 2013, Father Nikolai, a cleric of the Holy Sergius Church of Livny, consecrated the dome, which was then installed on the chapel. The building is a single-domed square with a narthex.

The first mention of the city of Livny in chronicles dates back to 1177. It was the center of the Livny principality, which was part of the Ryazan principality. Modern archaeological excavations have revealed the location of this city, situated 4 km upstream the Livenka River from the present city. This site has been named the Klyuchevskoye settlement by archaeologists. The first city was completely destroyed in the 13th century during Batu Khan's Western campaign, and at that time, the Livny principality disappeared. A revival occurred 300 years later when the Moscow principality, which included Livny lands, needed to protect its borders. Since 1571, among the 73 fortified points of the southern frontier, Ust-Livny on the Sosna River appeared.

In 1778, Livny became the district center of the Livny district within the Oryol governorate, and from 1796, the Oryol province. Since 1928, the city has been the center of the Livny district of the Oryol region of the Central Black Earth region, and since 1937, the Oryol region. In 1962, Livny was granted the status of a city of regional subordination. Since 2006, Livny forms the urban district "City of Livny."
