Since ancient times, starting with the first Orthodox missionaries and Primates, the tradition of erecting Annunciation churches has been preserved in the northern lands as a symbol of enlightenment and the beginning of salvation. One such well-known church dedicated to the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos was located in the village of Sizyabsk on the Izhma River. Its construction began in 1843. When the stone single-altar church was nearly completed in 1846, a misfortune occurred: on the day of the cross raising, the main dome along with the vault collapsed. The church was consecrated on August 23, 1854, after the vault was restored. The site for the church was chosen not by chance: from Sizyabsk, Izhma reindeer herders, Orthodox Christians, would head to the tundra after the Annunciation holiday.

The majestic stone building of the Annunciation church was adorned with light domes: four domes symbolizing the four Gospels surrounded the central dome of the church. The dome above the altar was dedicated to the Mother of God. Inside, the church was decorated with frescoes on Gospel themes. In the eastern wall, there was a colored stained glass window depicting the Most Holy Virgin Mary, which came alive every morning in the rays of the rising sun. Locals say that on the Annunciation, when "the sun plays," the Virgin Mary illuminated the parishioners with her joy. In Sizyabsk, the Annunciation is considered "the greatest holiday before God."

According to beliefs, the path to the Annunciation church can cleanse one of sin and heal from illnesses. From the village of Izhma to the church in Sizyabsk, the sick and suffering would cover the seven-kilometer path on their knees, taking breaks. To make it to the morning service, they would leave Izhma deep in the night. This difficult path symbolized Christ's journey to Golgotha, offering hope for bodily and spiritual resurrection. Parishioners would circle the church on their knees and remain so until the midday service.

Since the mid-1930s, the Annunciation church, like many others, was closed: first, it was turned into a warehouse, then into a club. In 1936, the last priest, Father Alexander, was arrested. That same year, the bell was removed, and the wooden bell tower was dismantled. A residential building now stands in its place.

Despite the closure of the church, the tradition of the holiday did not disappear in the village. Parishioners secretly carved a niche for candles in the eastern wall on the day of the Annunciation, reviving the church. They held a prayer service at the niche in honor of the Most Holy Theotokos. On the night before the holiday, dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of candles were lit by the church wall.

Records of the Annunciation celebrations in Sizyabsk in the early 1970s have been preserved: "Many believers gather near the church, sometimes up to 200 people. They come on foot from neighboring villages, as traveling by bus is considered a sin. Some cover the last meters to the church on their knees. Part of the believers gather at the house of Tatyana Fedorovna Vokueva, where the icon of the Annunciation is kept."

In recent years, more people have started gathering here, not only for the Annunciation but also for other holidays. At the request of the believers, local authorities installed concrete platforms for candles at the niche.

In 1993, the Sizyabsk church was returned to the Orthodox community. On the Annunciation, guests from different villages come here. The first parishioners appear in the church on the evening of April 6. They are mostly elderly women dressed in dark mantles. In Izhma, they say: "Until Easter, they do not eat meat and wear mantles." By evening, young people come to the church. Before entering the church, parishioners circle it three times, making the sign of the cross. In the center of the church, wooden trays for candles are placed, and on the altar, the icon of the Annunciation. People stand in the church for hours, waiting for a miracle. On the night of the Annunciation, families or individuals come to the church, and on the morning of April 7, residents and guests head to the church in a procession from the vow cross. In April 1995, for the first time in many years, a priest from the Ulyanovsk monastery held a service on the Annunciation in Sizyabsk. On that day, many were baptized. There is hope that the church will be restored and consecrated again.
