The Church of Archangel Michael in Vorkuta is located in a building constructed in 1941. It was the first brick structure in the mining town, previously housing a kindergarten.

The revival of Orthodoxy in Vorkuta began only in the 1990s. Initially, communities emerged, followed by the establishment of a Prayer House, and later, the Church of Archangel Michael. Although the building was brick, it had deteriorated significantly and required major repairs, for which there were insufficient funds. Assistance was provided by then-President Boris Yeltsin. During his visit to Vorkuta, the church's rector, Father Mikhail Duran (now deceased), informed him about the parish's difficulties. Funds were allocated for improvements, albeit modest ones. Subsequently, funds for repairs were collected by parishioners and residents of Vorkuta and the surrounding areas.

In 1997, the building was completely renovated under the guidance of architects V. Troshin and V. Ivashchenko. At that time, the church was consecrated in honor of Archangel Michael by Bishop Pitirim (now of Syktyvkar and Komi-Zyryan). The church houses a relic of Saint Barbara, the patroness of miners. Today, the Church of Archangel Michael is one of the most important Orthodox structures in Vorkuta.
