The first wooden church was built in 1778, and the second appeared in 1812. The idea of constructing a stone church long troubled the factory managers. From 1820 to 1829, they corresponded, discussing a project that was ultimately developed by the St. Petersburg architect Gramatikov, a student of Voronikhin.

In 1830, Countess Sofia Vladimirovna Stroganova expressed her willingness to finance the construction of the church. A stonemason, A.V. Maiorov, a peasant from Balakhna known for his skill and diligence, was invited to work on it.

On June 20, 1830, in the presence of a large number of people, the foundation of the third church in Ocher was laid, not far from where the first one stood. The construction lasted three years, and the finishing work took about two years. The artistic work was carried out by masters: carver Vsevolod Malykh, gilder and painter Vostroknutov. The iconostasis was made in the Italian style.

An iron fence around the church appeared in 1866, and the doors were made in the summer of 1887 by local craftsmen Lev Sholopov, his son Fyodor, and Alexey Moshchenikov. In 1895, a lace staircase leading to the upper chapel of the church was built.

In 1928, the dome and bell tower were destroyed, and in 1929, the building was repurposed as a club for the machine engineering plant.

Currently, work is underway to restore the dome and bell tower that were destroyed during the Soviet era. It is also planned to replace the old roof and restore it to its original appearance. There will be updates to the electrical wiring in accordance with fire safety requirements and restoration of the church's interior.

A Sunday school named after the holy martyr Alexius of Ocher operates at the church.
