The city of Mirny is a satellite of the First Russian State Test Spaceport "Plesetsk". It has a population of about 30,000 people, mainly military personnel and their families. During the Soviet era, the residents of the city were called "miryanin", which also refers to parishioners of the church or believers without spiritual rank.

Church life in Mirny and at the "Plesetsk" spaceport began in 1992 when clergymen led by Bishop Panteleimon of Arkhangelsk and Murmansk arrived here. The bishop consecrated the launch pad and the rocket before the launch. In May 1995, the construction of a new wooden church in honor of the Holy Archangel Michael began.

In 2004, the Kazan chapel was restored at the entrance to the city, which had previously stood on the site of Mirny at the Plestsy postal station for almost two centuries. Twice a year, on the days of the celebration of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, processions are held from the Archangel Michael Church to the chapel. At the end of 2009, military churches appeared at the spaceport in two of its parts.

The parish of the Holy Archangel Michael is actively engaged in social and missionary activities, and a children's Sunday school operates at the church.
