The Archangel Michael Church, belonging to the Spanish-Portuguese Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, is located in the Altea Hills urbanization between Alicante and Valencia. It is the first church in Spain built in the style of Russian wooden architecture.

In 1996, the Botzko family from Rostov-on-Don purchased a plot of land in Altea and decided to build an Orthodox church. That same year, a project for a stone church was commissioned.

In 1997, a community consisting of immigrants from Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova appealed to the Moscow Patriarchate to register a parish but received no response. Therefore, they turned to the Exarchate of parishes of the Russian tradition in Western Europe of the Constantinople Patriarchate, where they were registered at the end of 1999. On January 7, 2000, Priest Alexey Struve held the first service in a rented space.

For a long time, the issue of the church's construction and location was coordinated with local authorities and was resolved thanks to musician Mstislav Rostropovich. However, the church had to be built outside the city, which created transportation inconveniences for the believers.

In 2000, Archpriest Vladimir Koryak moved to Spain, becoming the spiritual mentor of the parish and overseeing the church's construction.

In 2001, the Altea administration registered the "Russian Orthodox Fund of Saint Archangel Michael," created for the church's construction. The wooden church of Arkhangelsk from the 17th century, with a cross shape, five domes, and an octagonal bell tower, served as a model.

On November 21, 2002, on the feast day, Bishop Mikhail of Klavdiopol (Storozhenko) laid the first stone and installed a cross at the future church's site.

In 2003, a wooden log cabin for the church was ordered, which was assembled by workers from Kirov. In 2004, domes and crosses for the church were made in Volgodonsk.

On July 18, 2004, the parish unanimously decided to appeal to Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia for recognition of the parish as part of the Moscow Patriarchate.

On December 24, 2004, the parish of Saint Archangel Michael was accepted into the Korun Diocese of the Moscow Patriarchate.

On April 30, 2005, the first Easter service was held in the still unfinished church.

On November 9, 2007, Archbishop Ricardo Blasques Perez assured the representative of the Russian Orthodox Church of readiness to assist Orthodox communities in Spain.

On November 11, 2007, Metropolitan Cyril (Gundyaev) of Smolensk and Kaliningrad performed the great consecration of the Archangel Michael Church. He was assisted by Archbishop Innocent (Vasiliev) of Korun and clergy of the Korun Diocese. The festive choir of the Moscow Danilov Monastery sang.

Orthodox believers from all over the country gathered for the consecration. Attendees included Catholic Archbishop of Alicante Monsignor Rafael Palmero, Mayor of Altea Andres Ripol, head of the "Russian Imperial House" Maria Vladimirovna Romanova, Russian Ambassador to Spain Alexander Kuznetsov, Russian Consul General in Barcelona Dmitry Kazemirov, and other honored guests. The church's benefactor Mikhail Valeryevich Botzko was awarded the Order of Saint Sergius of Radonezh III degree. By that time, the parish had about 80 members.
